TIME TO UPDATE YOUR CV?

Time out often gives us a renewed perspective, an opportunity to reflect on how we want to spend most of our days when typical working days resume. If you are thinking of a career change in the future – let us share a few tips to help you update your CV.

  • This is your CV and as such, needs to shout out your individual skills, expertise and experience.
  • Concentrate on your personal profile/personal statement. This should be specific to the role you are applying for – the experience you have that will support you in this role and aspirations in working with this company.
  • Keep it simple. Select a clear and easily read font and layout. Try adapting one of the templates available in MS Word for example.
  • Be specific – In the employment history section - give real examples, use statistics, share achievements and you don’t need to go further than 10yrs back
  • Make it relevant – In the education and qualifications section, start with your latest qualifications and highlight those that are important to this position, for example any professional certificates you may have.
  • First CV – it’s OK if you haven’t yet gained much experience. You can add in any work placements you have undertaken and spend a little more time in your key skills and hobbies and interests’ section.
  • Cover Letter – never underestimate the power of a covering letter. This is your opportunity to stand out – don’t just regurgitate your CV. Think about the job you are applying for, who will be reading it. Do a little research on their website and social media platforms and understand the company and business culture. Highlight the skills and experience you have relevant to the role and tie in your career aspirations and how this may help the organisation.
  • SPAG – check and double check - make sure that you check your grammar and spelling!
